Search Engine Optimization (SEO) means making it easy for search engines and for humans to find you online.
Keywords are words or terms that humans use to search for a service, for instance, massage. But that word–massage–is much too broad to get you any business. If you type the word ‘massage’ into a search engine (like Google or Bing) you will get millions of results. In fact, today, there are 404,000,000 results! You can see that there is very, very little chance of anyone finding your website.
A keyword is one word. A keyphrase is several words.
You will want to use the keywords that will help someone who is searching for your service to find you. What are those keywords?
First off: You will use keywords in your titles or subject lines, in your articles and in the place on your website where you put search terms or keywords for SEO.
Let’s assume you practice massage in Detroit, Michigan.
Your keywords are not ‘massage’ because, remember, that’s way too broad. Instead, they would be Detroit massage, Detroit MI massage, massage Detroit MI, Detroit Michigan massage therapy, Detroit Michigan Massage Therapist, etc. So whenever a human types any of the variations of your keywords (search terms) into a search engine, your website will come up. Commas go between keyphrases only.
Pick the keywords or keyphrases that people are most likely to type into a search bar when they want to find YOU.
If you practice a specialty, use that keyword, too. For instance, now your keyphrase becomes Detroit MI reiki or Detroit Michigan massage for pain relief.
Of course, the more content (original articles) that you have the better and the more times you use your keywords the better (but not to the point of looking silly or spammy.)
You may not get the exposure you want for a few months but if you keep adding content and keep using the appropriate keywords, you will start to be discovered by both search engines and potential clients.
If you don’t have a website yet, you can create a free one with weebly.com or one of the other free web creation sites which have no up-front fees, no monthly fees, no costs at all. And, yes, there is a slot for you to place your keywords at weebly and at other free hosting sites.
